The Bronx Trolley Ready to Ride Again!

by Simone ·

THE BRONX CULTURE TROLLEY TOUR - The South Bronx
NEXT EVENT - WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3rd!

Get ready to hop aboard once again on the Bronx Trolley! The Bronx Rocks has covered this event every couple of months or so (here, here, here, here, and here) and the evening never disappoints. Below are some very-belated photos from last November’s event:

From LDR Studios (Halloween-themed Visions of Horror):

From Longwood Art Gallery - Hostos (Photography Exhibit)

From The Bronx Blue Bedroom Project (Pre-Holiday Art Sale):

New on the Trolley Tour this time was the work of Linda Cunningham. Sadly, the photos just did not capture the wonderful quality of Linda’s live/work space and her body of work on disply. Next time!)

The South Bronx in Black and White

by Simone ·

Since The Bronx Rocks focuses mostly on all the wonderful progress this borough has made in the last few decades (and in defense, I say that the Bronx has had enough bad publicity and frightening images published to last a lifetime!), many readers and friends often ask if there is any raw, urban grit still left in the Bronx. I have to chuckle and say….um….yes…yes, there is. Just a few snapshots I took while walking around some ‘off the beaten path’ areas of the South Bronx yesterday….

Boho Boogiedowner!

LDR STUDIO GALLERY - Mott Haven (On The Bronx Cultural Trolley Tour)

So, I rode the Bronx Trolley Tour again last night (lots more photos on that coming soon) and LDR Studio Gallery was on the route for the first time.  The Bronx Rocks not too long ago featured another fab South Bronx artist whose apartment acts as a blank slate for her art – Blanka Amezkua - and I was thrilled to find another really cool Bronx artist pad to gawk at and get my inner bohemian on!  (Check out the artistic flair sprinkled all over this railroad 4th floor walk-up!) Besides being amazingly talented, photographer and artist Luis D. Rosado is friendly, humble and loves to share his thoughts on the continually bourgeoning Bronx art scene. And like Blanka, he has generously opened his home up as a showcase space for other Bronx artists who don’t always have avenues available to showcase their work.  Now THAT rocks!  (Contact Luis at LRStudioGallery@gmail.com)

A Zagat Rated Restaurant WHERE?

by Simone ·

Pio Pio (Peruvian Restaurant) Mott Haven, South Bronx (264 Cypress Ave)

A great find in a section of Mott Haven that doesn’t see much upscale action! Delicious food, huge glasses of Sangrias (no liquor license so sadly they cannot sell their famous Pisco Sours), friendly staff and lively, energizing music make for a fantastic atmosphere. Congratulations on making this year’s Zagat list for the Bronx, guys! Check this place out - but make sure to bring cash (unless you want to be running down the street in high heels to the nearest bodega in search of an ATM like I was last night - NOT fun!) Note to owners: Who only takes American Express these days?!!?

The Bronx Rocks! (Literally)

by Simone ·
I posted this several weeks ago, but just had to remind all of you what a great time is to be had tomorrow night if you show up at The Bruckner Bar and Grill to catch these great acts! Have a blast!

MOTT HAVEN - SoBro

For all you young and hip underground rock fans - here’s a SAVE THE DATE for you:

A REVOLUTION! Party - Friday, September 26th at  Bruckner’s Bar & Grill

Connected with the same group that brought you the Bronx Underground (NSFW), Revolution! has finally brought the dance party scene to the South Bronx! Here’s what one of the organizers, Anita Colby, has to say: “Produced by a collective of Bronx native musicians and artists with a vision to mix live bands, art, nightlife and Bronx authenticity; the Revolution! Party exploded onto the scene this July”.  And yes, Anita, we agree with you when you say that “The Bronx is burnin’ indeed!” She also says that this will be a monthly event at the Bruckner Bar & Grill! We think that’s great news for Mott Haven (and, of course, the Bronx in general)! You not only get great music, a fresh and hip party scene, but you get Bronx prices as well - A $7 cover and $3 shots! Show me any where else in NYC where you are going to find that combination! Yeah- I didn’t think so!

Take a listen to a few past and present acts from a Revolution Party: Fire and ReasonThe Scene,
Kissy Kamikaze, and William Control. (NSFW)

SoBro! (part 3)

Mott Haven, South Bronx
(From my earlier post at The Boogiedowner): “We all know that Mott Haven in the South Bronx is aggressively nippin’ at the heals of a certain neighborhood in Brooklyn, trying hard to displace that burg’s rep as THE spot if you are looking for future Hipster Heaven.  It’s not there yet, but is sure is gaining steam.  Back in the nineties, I called Billburg home and when I visit Mott Haven, I feel like I am stepping back in time. EXACTLY the same feeling that I got back then.  There is still enough raw urban grit, a rough-around-the-edges vibe and a certain uneasy desolation that will give newbies a feeling of being a hip pioneer ahead of his or her time.  Searching for some street cred, Manhattanites? I suggest you put Mott Haven on your short list! (Although to be honest, the real pioneers have been here for a good decade but shhh….we won’t tell!)”
The pictures below are random shots that I took while walking around for a few hours after leaving Alexander’s Cafe, The Bruckner Bar & Grill and Sweetwaters’s (see posts below):
